“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams.” by Henry David Thoreau is just one of the many motivational quotes on following your dreams that I’ve pinned onto my “WISDOM” Pinterest board. Everyday I’m reminded that my dreams wouldn’t even be possible if not for the sacrifices my grandparents and parents have made. Talking about my family working as migrant field workers in our recent Mother’s Day feature in the SF Chronicle was a reminder to myself that I am truly living the American Dream.
Just being able to design my own collection and pursue a career as a designer is more than my family ever imagined possible when moving to America from Mexico. After I spoke at fashion schools Academy of Art University and the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, emails from students asking for advice on the fashion industry pour into my inbox. I always give the same advice my mother gives me – work hard and don’t give up. Staying true to yourself and your vision is another important lesson I’ve learned over the years. I’ve always been a dreamer – I realize now how my day dreams of wandering through fields in light silk dresses has crossed over into my entire brand establishing this ‘World of Alyssa Nicole’. Now I’m confidently designing a collection for dreamers of dreams.
